On his newest full length offering “Help Yourself”, Laramie, Wyoming based recording artist Evan Kallas, AKA Ovaltine, explores new emotional and sonic zones within his songwriting pallet. His third LP under the moniker balances a gritty post-hardcore ethos with calming ambient sections, which combine to echo the anxious but pacified perspective in Kallas’s lyrics. The percussive interplay between angular guitar lines and syncopated drumming elevates his soft-spoken vocal style like someone coaching themselves through a mental breakdown. The titular track shows Kallas lose this battle as his voice is overcome by a crashing outburst of instruments, but not before echoing the album’s namesake; that of self-reliance. “Help Yourself” is indicative of Kallas’ maturation as a musician, lyricist, producer and human that will stand as a pivotal moment in the Ovaltine’s already established recorded output.
